1 Dead, 4 Injured In Rural McHenry County Crash: Police

The collision happened near Union Monday afternoon.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — A 23-year-old man is dead and four others were injured in a two-vehicle crash near Union Monday afternoon.

The collision happened at about 5 p.m. when a 2000 Toyota Sienna was headed west on East Coral Road and did not stop for a stop sign at the intersection of East Coral Road and South Union Road in unincorporated Union, according to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.

The Toyota Sienna was hit by a 2008 Toyota 4 Runner, which was headed north on South Union Road, authorities said. Both vehicles went into a field, and the 4Runner rolled over to its side.

A 23-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the 4Runner, a 40-year-old Woodstock woman, and the driver of the Sienna, a 70-year-old Marengo man, were taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, according to a news release.

Two other passengers in the Sienna, a 23-year-old and a 41-year-old Marengo man, were taken to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley. Both sustained life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Meanwhile, a wire to a utility pole was damaged in the crash, causing the pole to move and wires to sag low to the ground. ComEd responded to the scene and there was a short power outage in the area as repairs were being made.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, and the cause of the collision remains under investigation.
