1 Killed, Over 30 Displaced In Apartment Complex Fire: Woodstock Authorities

Twelve of the 24 units in the complex were significantly damaged in the overnight blaze, authorities said.

WOODSTOCK, IL — A man died, three people were taken to hospitals and over 30 were displaced in an overnight fire at an apartment complex in Woodstock, according to authorities.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday to the blaze in the 700 block of St. John’s Road, authorities said, adding multiple 911 calls reported heavy fire and people possibly trapped in the bulding. Firefighters arrived within five minutes and found the blaze showing from the two-story complex.

The fire had spread rapidly to the attic and traveled the length of the building, according to the district, which used two tower ladders to extinguish the blaze from above. The incident was under control around midnight but crews stayed at the scene to put out hot spots.

Twelve of the 24 units in the complex were significantly damaged, authorities said, adding the American Red Cross was helping with relocation efforts for the dozens who were displaced, with St. John’s Lutheran Church at 401 St. John’s Road serving as a relocation center.

Three people were taken to local hospitals for treatment, according to the district. One man was brought to a hospital and died. A woman baby were evaluated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

More than 20 fire agencies assisted in the response along with Woodstock police and dispatchers.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
