14-Year-Old Boy in Serious Condition After Crashing Stolen Car in Wonder Lake

McHenry County sheriff's deputies say the boy rolled the car several times before coming to a stop.

McHENRY COUNTY, IL - A 14-year-old Wonder Lake boy remained in serious but stable condition on Monday after wrecking a vehicle over the weekend that he'd taken from a relative.

The boy crashed and rolled a 2007 Dodge Magnum SXT shortly after 5:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of East Wonder Lake Road on Saturday, July 22, according to a McHenry County Sheriff's Office news release.

Deputies and firefighters responded to the scene — just east of Maplewood Drive — and discovered that he had driven the vehicle off the roadway, struck a utility pole, and rolled over "several times."

"The driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash," the release said. "Speed and lack of driver experience are believed to be factors in the crash."

The boy was using his relative's car without permission, officials confirmed. The incident remained under investigation Monday by those in the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit.
