3 McHenry Co. Beaches Remain Closed Due To High Bacteria Levels

A beach is closed because monitoring done by the McHenry County Department of Health shows unsafe bacteria levels.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL —Three McHenry County beaches are closed due to high bacteria levels, health officials said.

  • Lake Park Beach in Crystal Lake will be closed for five days due to high bacteria levels. The start date for the closure began on June 26.
  • Dorothy Court Beach in Island Lake will also be closed for five days. The start date for the closure began on June 26.
  • Veterans Park Beach in Island Lake has not yet opened for the 2025 swim season. It was ordered closed in May due to high bacteria levels and remained closed as of Tuesday.
A beach is closed because monitoring conducted by the McHenry County Department of Health determined that bacteria levels exceed those established under state law. The beach may also be closed because a heavy rainfall or known incident may have contaminated the water, according to health department information.

Before the beach reopens, the water needs to be re-sampled and the samples from both the shallow and deep areas must be below 235 CFU of E coli/100ml before the beach will be allowed to re-open. It typically takes 24 hours after receipt of the samples to confirm the bacteria levels.
