3 Weekends Of Recycling Events For McHenry County Residents

County residents can recycle electronics, documents and latex paint at these upcoming events being held by the MCDH and partners.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — McHenry County residents have three upcoming weekends to recycle electronics, documents and latex paint. It's your chance to do some fall cleaning thanks to the McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) and partners teaming up for three recycling events, all detailed in a release sent to Patch.

The first? An electronics recycling event by the MCDH in coordination with Elgin Recycling and the McHenry County Environmental Defenders, scheduled for 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, Oct. 19, at McHenry County College (main entrance, south side of the building), located at 8900 Northwest Highway, Crystal Lake.

  • Alkaline batteries will be recycled at no charge. Only alkaline AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V can be accepted. Rechargeable or other types of batteries cannot be accepted.
  • Fluorescent tubes (fee of 50 cents to $1 each), clean Styrofoam, packing peanuts, reusable bubble wrap, and cloth items such as clothing, linens, rags, and shoes tied together by the laces will also be accepted by the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County at this event.
  • Televisions and computer monitors can be recycled for a fee of $15 (up to 20 inches), and $25 dollars (for 21 inches and over).
  • Computers (desktop, laptop, netbook, notebook, tablet), keyboards, mice, printers, fax machines, scanners, small scale servers, DVD players or recorders, VCRs, video consoles, portable digital music players, digital converter boxes, and cable and satellite receivers will be accepted by Elgin Recycling.   • Electronic devices can also be dropped off at the Crystal Lake Recycling Center, 5114 E Terra Cotta Avenue in Crystal Lake from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays..

On Saturday, Oct. 26, a document destruction event will be held at the McHenry County Administration Building, located at 667 Ware Rd, Woodstock from 8 a.m. until noon, or until the truck is full. The MCDH is teaming up with Paper Tiger for this event. Paper Tiger, AAA Certified by the National Association of Information Destruction, will shred all documents onsite before leaving.

  • Commercial companies are not eligible for this event.
  • Boxes may be limited to four per person.

Then on Saturday, Nov. 2, EPaint Solutions and MCDH will hold a no-cost latex paint recycling event from 9 a.m. until noon at McHenry County College, located at 8900 Northwest Highway, Crystal Lake. This event is only for preregistered county residents to participate, the department said. The MCDH advises community members to contact the MCDH Environmental Health Division at 815-334-4585 to preregister. Registration will be closed when the maximum number of paint containers has been reached, according to the release.

  • Paint must be in the original containers, with cans up to 1 gallon in size accepted.
  • The amount of paint accepted from each person may be limited.
  • Other recyclable materials cannot be collected at this event.

This recycling event is held in conjunction with McHenry County College’s Green Living Expo, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
