Axe Throwing Business Plans Proposed For Crystal Lake Building
Here's where the business for the recently popular activity could pop up.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — The recent axe throwing trend may make its way into Crystal Lake this summer, thanks to one man's hope of filling a local spot with all things centered on the exciting activity. According to Northwest Herald, Angelo Douros wants to open the 31,000-square-foot establishment at 975 Nimco Drive, Unit D, located west of Route 31 and north of James R. Rakow Road. Northwest Herald said according to city documents, the building is vacant and industrial, in addition to what "the subject" (Douros) believes is ideal to use because of its open floor plan.
On May 1, the Planning and Zoning Commission advised the City Council to provide a three-year alternative use permit for the establishment so it can run in the area that's planned for manufacturing, assistant city planner Kathryn Cowlin said, according to the news report. Cowlin added that this type of permit lets the business operate in order to determine if the unified development ordinance should be amended by right or specialty permit when it comes to keeping the business there.
According to Northwest Herald, Douros said he’ll name the establishment Spartan Axe Throwing “because we’re Greek,” and city documents reported the unit would include a front office with a check-in area, and activities in the warehouse portion. Douros said the establishment would be a secure environment where groups would receive axe throwing tutorials, in addition to separating axe-throwers from each other with metal wiring, and the possibility of an age restriction being implemented for safety. Northwest Herald added that according to Douros, axe throwing is also a great workout and good for "family bonding."
