Greetings Crystal Lakers and Cary residents on this Monday, Aug. 5.
Summer feels like it's quickly slipping away - with everyone's thoughts turning to back-to-school shopping, registering for high school (online pre-registration runs through Thursday, Aug. 15 at www.d155.org), and getting the older ones prepared to leave for college.
The cooler temperatures only add to the feeling of fall. Good news for those of us who like it hot - forecasts this week call for temps to climb into the 80s by midweek.

Before you get too caught up in the busy "school, sports and extra curricular" schedules, take time to enjoy one last summer bash at the "Blast on the Beach," scheduled for this Saturday.
If you have kids, bring them to the Kids Fair and Treasure Hunt at the Blast - big hit last year. Plus, there'll be live music, food to buy, crafters to see and other vendors. And, admission is free- for everyone!

Another great event is the miniature golf fundraiser for the Tom Nejmeh family of Algonquin. Tom died unexpectedly in April, and his friends, Christina and Mike Gallagher of Crystal Lake, are holding the fundraiser to help Tom's family. The Gallaghers described Tom as a "family man, lover of sports and sole provider for his family."

5 to 8 p.m. Three Oaks Recreation Area, 5517 Route 14, Crystal Lake
The Crystal Lake Police Department is hosting its annual National Night Out, part of a nationwide effort to brings resident and police officers together to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
Admission is free to Crystal Lake residents. Activities include free face painting, police and fire/ rescue vehicles on display, a police K-9 demonstration, IL/ WI Search and Rescue K-9 demonstration, "Glowby" the Bubbler and kids games.
Tuesday, Aug. 6: National Night Out
6 to 9 p.m. Jaycee Park, Cary
The Cary Police Department is participating in the 28th Annual National Night Out, a nationwide effort to bring police and residents together to promote safety. The free event in Cary will feature a Cary Police squad car and motorcycle, state police cruiser, Cary Fire truck and rescue squad, National Guard military police, Drug and Gang Awareness Display, and a Whitey's Towing big rig.

Friday, Aug. 9: "28 Days" Concert
8 p.m. Raue Center for the Arts, 26 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake.Free family event features the band "28 Days," which performs cover songs by U2, Seal and Lenny Kravitz. Special concert will also have food, games, prizes and more.
Saturday, Aug. 10: Blast on the Beach
3 to 9 p.m. Main Beach, 300 Lake Shore Dr., Crystal Lake
The "Blast on the Beach" is the last party of the summer season. Sponsored by BMO Harris Bank and the Crystal Lake Park District, the "Blast on the Beach" has free admission and is packed with entertainment by The Lounge Puppets and Circus Boy, as well as treasure hunt for the kids, craft fair, kids fair, bags tournament, beer/ wine garden and food vendors.
Saturday, Aug. 10 Mini Golf Fundraiser for Tom Nejmeh Family
3 to 9 p.m. Lippold Park Mini Golf, 1251 Route 176, Crystal Lake
Tom Nejmeh grew up in Crystal Lake, graduated from Crystal Lake South High School, and eventually married the love of his life, Heidi. The couple settled in Algonquin.
Tom suffered a cardiac attack while driving in April, and died unexpectedly at the age of 40. His friends, Mike and Christina Gallagher, of Crystal Lake, are holding this mini-golf fundraiser, which includes a 50/50 raffle to help the family Tom left behind: Heidi and their three young children. $10 per golfer. Saturday, Aug. 10: Defenders Recycling Drive
9 a.m. to noon, Farm Bureau parking lot, 1102 McConnell Rd., Woodstock
The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County's much anticipated recycling drive collects all those unusual items the garbage man won't take. Drop off fluorescent tubes, Styrofoam, electronics, and batteries.
Electronics, computers, phones, printers, clean microwaves, and electronic toys accepted. TVs and computer monitors accepted for a donation of $10-$35. The Defenders’ volunteers will help unload your items, and sort the materials.
