CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — Without community leaders, I think Crystal Lake wouldn’t hum along nearly as smoothly as it does. We’d miss their contributions in big and small ways.

Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize these often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions.

This submission comes from Susette P. who nominated Ms. Tina Karaway.

What does this community leader do?

She's a boss mental health advocate a NAMI in Crystal Lake. I don't know how she does it but she is everywhere helping everyone all the time.

Why do you believe the community leader should be recognized or honored?

She never says no to people that need help. You can't find that anywhere anymore. I asked her for weekend appointments because I was working two jobs- she said if you are trying I'm trying and was there on a Sunday for 6 hours. She helped me get my 3 kids help too. I will never forget her. I wish I could win the lotto I would give nami money because they help everyone for free. The only service people I trust with my life.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the community hero?

She treats you like her own family. She shares her experiences so you learn to trust people again and she shows up for you like a boss dog with a bite that won't let go till she gets results! She needs a parade and when that happens I'll be there!! Nami is a free place to get help for your mental health. Tina is nami..they are understaffed but she says- that's ok, we just pull together and do what we need to do. Her hugs fix everything too. Check her out. She's legit.
