Canterbury Elementary Partners With Comcast For Volunteer Project

Comcast NBCUniversal partnered with Canterbury Elementary to work on a garden revitalization project as part of National Volunteer Month.

From Canterbury Elementary School: On Saturday, April 22, more than 150 volunteers worked to “make change happen” at Canterbury Elementary on Comcast Cares Day, the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer event. During National Volunteer Month, Comcast celebrated its 16th Comcast Cares Day, adding to the nearly 5 million service hours to improve nearly 7,700 projects in the U.S. and around the world since Comcast Cares Day started in 2001. This is the second year in a row Comcast NBCUniversal and the Canterbury school community came together to work on an outdoor revitalization project at Canterbury.

Volunteers consisted of Canterbury students, staff and parents as well as Comcast employees and community members. Canterbury Elementary School principal Stacy Graff and Canterbury garden committee chair and parent Jacki Rubio collaborated with Comcast regional manager of construction and Canterbury parent Nathan Burman to organize the project and recruit volunteers to participate.

“On behalf of Canterbury, I’d like to thank Comcast NBCUniversal, Jacki Rubio and Nathan Burman for initiating and leading this project. I’d also like to thank the Canterbury PTO and all the volunteers for their hard work and dedication on Comcast Cares Day,” said Graff. “Thanks to their help, we were able to revitalize the school grounds and create a beautiful outdoor classroom garden where we’ll now be able to teach students about horticulture and grow and share fresh produce with our school community.”

“As we celebrate our 16th annual Comcast Cares Day, we are proud to partner with Canterbury Elementary School to make a difference in the Crystal Lake community,” added John Crowley, Comcast’s Greater Chicago Region senior vice president. “It’s truly amazing what’s possible in a day, when 150 volunteers donate their time to make a difference in the lives of others. I’m inspired by the community’s response to Comcast Cares Day, and I thank the participants who helped to make this effort a success.”

In addition to the volunteer accomplishments on Comcast Cares Day, the Comcast Foundation will provide a grant in recognition of the Comcast employees and many volunteers who gave their time. This grant will support the goals and mission of Canterbury Elementary School’s PTO.
