Car Fire Closes Route 14 In Cary For 2 Hours

No one was injured when the car started on fire on Route 14 at Cary-Algonquin Road on Monday afternoon.

CARY, IL — A car started on fire at the intersection of Cary Algonquin Road and Northwest Highway on Monday afternoon, closing down Route 14 for nearly two hours.

The Cary Fire Protection District was called to the intersection at about 4 p.m. for a reported minor vehicle crash. When they arrived, they found a two-door sedan in the median just east of the intersection with heavy fire showing.

Crews quickly determined the incident was not a crash but a single-vehicle fire, according to authorities.

The driver, a male teenager, was able to exit the vehicle before the fire spread and was not hurt, an according to a news release from the fire protection district.

The vehicle is considered a total loss, fire officials said.

Route 14 was closed in both directions for nearly two hours while crews worked to ensure the area was safe and cleared, according to the news release.

The roadway iced over quickly due to the firefighting efforts and air temperatures and salt trucks were requested to the scene to treat the slick road conditions.
