Cary Man Arrested After Allegedly Impersonating Police Officer In Crystal Lake

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Jeremy Smith told Three Oaks Recreation employees he was a detective.

A Cary man was charged after he allegedly impersonated a police detective to employees of Three Oaks Recreation Area in Crystal Lake.

Jeremy M. Smith, 43, of the 6500 block of Dublin Drive in Cary, was charged with one count of false personation of a peace officer, a Class 4 felony.

Police records show that Smith turned himself in to the Cary Police Department on September 9.

An arrest warrant was issued for Smith on September 8 after an investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department, court records show.

The warrant stems from an incident on August 7 at Three Oaks Recreation Area, 5517 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Smith represented himself to employees as a detective with the Crystal Lake Police Department.

Smith is not a police officer and intentionally falsely represented himself as one, the complaint said.

Further details about why Smith allegedly impersonated a police officer were not immediately available.

Smith was released from custody after posting 10% of his $10,000 bond. A court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
