Ceiling Collapses During Cary Fire: Fire Officials
Three firefighters were not injured Sunday evening when the ceiling collapsed while they battled the blaze, officials said.

A Cary home was left uninhabitable after a fire which caused a ceiling to collapse on three firefighters Sunday evening, officials said. The Cary Fire Protection District responded around 6:31 p.m. Sunday to the 1000 block of Woodbridge Drive in Cary for a report of a structure fire.
The first fire unit arrived within five minutes and found flames through the roof of a two-story house.

Bystanders were using a garden hose from a neighboring house to spray water on the fire, according to Cary Fire Protection District Lt. Michael Douglass. The homeowner reported everyone was out of the house.
Douglass said that the homeowner was in his backyard with other family members when they smelled what they thought was plastic burning.

The homeowner began looking for the cause of the odor and discovered a fire on the roof. He alerted his wife, who was the only person inside the house at the time, and she safely evacuated prior to the fire department arriving.

Firefighters began a transitional attack by first extinguishing the fire from the exterior and then moving inside to extinguish the remaining fire in the attic, Douglass said.
Three firefighters were evaluated but declined medical treatment after a ceiling collapsed on them. No injures were reported by firefighters or any residents of the home.
The fire was marked under control by 6:52 p.m., which was approximately 16 minutes after firefighters arrived.
Firefighters remained at the scene for over an hour and a half conducting fire investigation, salvage and overhaul operations, Douglass said.
29 Cary firefighters responded along with firefighters from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Barrington, Barrington-Countryside, Fox River Grove, and Nunda-Rural.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but does not appear to be suspicious.
