Chicago Marathon: Top Finishers from Crystal Lake and Cary

The 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon was held this past Sunday, Oct. 12.

About 93 Crystal Lake and 60 Cary residents participated in the marathon, according to race results on the Chicago Marathon website. 

But another group of Crystal Lake-area running enthusiasts served as volunteers at the first water station along the route.

Race pacer Mike Stotz, of Crystal Lake, described this year's race as one "gorgeous day." The good weather drew huge, cheering crowds of spectators, which served as powerful motivators for the runners, he said.

"The city of Chicago never looked so good," said Stotz, whose job as a pacer was to run the race in under 3 hours, 24 minutes and 30 seconds (he finished at 3:24:26!).

"Ten minutes before the race starts they play the National Anthem, and this year there was an Air Force jet flyover. It was really inspiring. I also loved seeing the local group of runners (members of the Crystal Lake Hillstriders and the Running Depot) at the first water station that was 1.5 miles into the race. They were all shouting and cheering. It was great."

Stotz hit the road at 4:20 a.m. to make sure he was in his Pacer tent by 5:45 a.m. The water station volunteers had to be in place by 3:30 a.m. Sunday, he said. The first wave of racers started at 7:30 a.m., and the second wave took off at 8 a.m.

Stotz said the good weather provided a positive outcome by race end for many of the participants. Sometimes runners can be sick or distressed at marathons due to the weather and physical challenge.

"One thing about this year is that people seemed to be happy," Stotz said. "They had enough gas to keep going. I didn't see a lot of people in distress."
