Child Dead In Hit-And-Run Crash Near Crystal Lake

The 15-year-old boy was hit from behind by a vehicle while biking south on Terra Cotta Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — A 15-year-old boy was killed after a driver hit him while he was biking on Terra Cotta Road near Crystal Lake Wednesday night.

The incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. when the teen was biking with another 15-year-old south on Terra Cotta Road near the intersection of Deering Oaks Lane in unincorporated Crystal Lake, according to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.

The vehicle hit one of the bikes, which had a red activated taillight, from behind. The child was taken to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop and fled the scene, according to the news release.

The crash is being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
