Convicted Lake Co. Felon Charged With Gun, Ammunition Possession

U.S. Attorney's Office said according to complaint, said sales for unregistered firearm parts took place at the Wauconda man's residence.

CHICAGO — A convicted felon was charged Friday with federal firearm violations on accusations of illegally possessing a machine gun, silencers and ammunition in his Lake County home, according to the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois. Gregory Domenico, 35, of Wauconda, was arrested Thursday, and law enforcement conducted a court-authorized search of his home, officials said in a release. Domenico is charged with one count of illegal possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, and one count of illegal possession of an unregistered machine gun and three silencers, John R. Lausch, Jr., United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois, announced Friday, according to a news release.

The U.S. Attorney's Office reported Domenico possessed the machine gun, silencers and five rifle cartridges at his home in December 2018 and January 2019, according to a criminal complaint and affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago.

According to a release, Domenico was ordered to remain in federal custody Friday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Sheila Finnegan, during an initial court appearance in Chicago.

The case was investigated by the Lake County Gang Crimes Task Force, including a recent incident where according to the complaint, an undercover officer made several purchases of unregistered firearm parts from Domenico, officials said, adding that the complaint said sales occurred at Domenico’s residence.

According to the complaint, Domenico sold the undercover officer two silencers on Dec. 13, 2018, in addition to a silencer and an auto-sear on Dec. 18, 2018, and five rifle cartridges on Jan. 22, the release said.

Due to a previous felony conviction, Domenico could not lawfully possess a firearm, firearm parts, or ammunition. He's also never held a federal firearms license or has registered the possession and transfer of any items with the National Firearm Registration and Transfer Record, the complaint states, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

A detention hearing for Domenico is set for 10:30 a.m. Feb. 27.
