A sports utility vehicle hit a 15-year-old bicyclist from behind near Crystal Lake on Wednesday night. The boy died at a local hospital.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — The McHenry County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help as they try and track down sports utility vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision near Crystal Lake.

Police on Thursday provided more information regarding the SUV, which hit the 15-year-old boy while he biked with another teen on Terra Cotta Road near Deering Oaks Lane in unincorporated Crystal Lake at about 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Authorities say the 2017 or 2018 Jeep Cherokee is believed to be a dark-colored red, according to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office. Police are asking the public as well as employees at local body shops and dealerships to contact police if they come across a Jeep Cherokee matching that description that also has front end damage.

Authorities say the SUV hit one of two bikes traveling in the southbound lane of traffic on Terra Cotta Road before leaving the scene on Wednesday day. The SUV hit the bike, which had a red activated taillight, from behind.

Paramedics transported the biker, a 15-year-old boy, to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry where he died, police said.

The crash is being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
