Drug Dealer Sentenced To 7.5 Years In Fatal Overdose

Derrick J. Buttrum was found guilty of felony delivery of a controlled substance, according to the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office.

MCHENRY, IL — A McHenry County man accused of providing the drugs that lead to the death of a 40-year-old McHenry man in June 2018 was found guilty of felony delivery of a controlled substance, following a negotiated plea before Judge Robert Wilbrandt, Patrick Kenneally, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announced Wednesday. According to a release from the state's attorney's office, 30-year-old Derrick J. Buttrum was sentenced to 7.5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).

According to the release, McHenry Police Department officers were called to the McHenry home of Richie Hyde on June 28, 2018, for a reported fatal drug overdose.

First responders administered Naloxone and performed CPR on Hyde but the life-saving measures did not work, according to a news release from the McHenry Police Department.

Autopsy results showed Hyde died from a polysubstance overdose due to the combined adverse effect of alprazolam, oxycodone and fentanyl, according to authorities. Additional investigation revealed Buttrum had delivered heroin containing fentanyl to Hyde shortly before he died, according to the state's attorneys office.

This case was investigated by McHenry Police Department members and was prosecuted by Robert Ladd and Kyle Bruett of the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.
