Fuel Spill Into Storm Sewer Prompts Massive HazMat Response
Emergency crews were called to the area of Route 47 and Route 173 in Hebron for a "substantial gasoline leak" Monday afternoon.
LAKE AND MCHENRY COUNTIES, IL — Hazardous materials teams in Lake and McHenry counties are investigating a fuel spill that went into storm sewers Monday, authorities said.
Emergency crews were called to the area of Route 47 and Route 173 in Hebron for a "substantial gasoline leak" that led to an undetermined amount of fuel going into the storm sewers, according to information posted on the Hebro-Alden-Greenwod Fire Protection District Facebook page. The leak could cause a "potential environmental hazard," authorities said.
It does not appear that the leak has affected the village of Hebron's drinking water, according to the Facebook post.

As of Monday afternoon, hazardous materials teams from across Lake and McHenry counties were on the scene and working to mitigate the spill. The Environmental Protection Agency has also been notified.
Drivers and residents were urged to avoid the area. Authorities said more information would be released at a later time.
