Golf-Ball-Size Hail Expected in Sunday Night's Storms

WARNING: NWS says high winds, hail and lightning will enter region after 7 p.m. An afternoon storm claimed one life today.

Severe thunderstorms — with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, wind gusts up to 60 mph and golf-ball-sized hail — are expected to hit the Chicago area tonight and into the late-night hours.

A tornado warning was issued at 8:47 p.m. for Lake County until 9:30 p.m. Wall clouds and a funnel cloud have been spotted over Lake County, but the storm cell is moving rapidly over Lake Michigan.

The storms are coming into the region from Wisconsin and headed south to southeast, according to the National Weather Service, which expects them to pass through northern Illinois after 7 p.m.

The storms should subside by midnight, according to the NWS. The risk of a tornado is slight at about 2 percent, according to the NWS.

Sunday night’s outburst is expected to be more severe than the mid-afternoon storm that moved swiftly through the western suburbs and into Chicago between 2:45 and 3:30 p.m. Heavy winds, recorded at 54 mph near O’Hare Airport, blew over a tent at a festival in DuPage County, killing one person and injuring 15 to 20 other people.
