Lake Co. Sheriff's Office Buys License Plate Reading Cameras

Fifteen license plate reading cameras will be put in place on state right of ways across the county, police said.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Board recently approved funds to purchase 15 licenses plate reading cameras, which will be utilized across the county for the first time by the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The Lake County Board authorized the two-year, $90,000 contract during a recent meeting, according to the Daily Herald. The safety cameras are solar-powered and can collect information on the body type, color, license plate make and state the vehicle is registered in as well as other details such as bumper stickers and decals, which is meant provide investigative leads for police.

Finding missing persons and investigating other crimes will be the main use for the information collected by the cameras, Deputy Chief Chris Covelli told the Daily Herald.
