Large Barn Catches Fire Outside Woodstock

It took firefighters nearly two hours to extinguish a large barn that caught on fire outside of Woodstock Saturday afternoon, officials said. The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:40 p.m. Saturday to the 14500 block of Perkins Road in unincorporated Woodstock.

Captain Brendan Parker said that firefighters arrived and found heavy flames and smoke coming from a barn behind a home. Firefighters engaged in an aggressive exterior attack and pulled two hose lines.

The nearest fire hydrant was two miles from the scene which prompted the activation of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) to the second level. That brought additional water tenders, firefighters and fire station coverage companies.

“Due to the structural complexity and collapse of the second floor, crews were unable to gain entry. The fire was deemed under control within two hours,” Parker said.

No residents or firefighters were injured. No animals were inside the 1 ½ story barn, which is approximately 3,000 square feet. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours monitoring and extinguishing hidden fires.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious and it remains under investigation by the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
