Antoine Smith, of Round Lake, was taken into custody on April 28, authorities said.
GURNEE, IL — A 32-year-old Round Lake man, who was a detective with the Gurnee Police Department, faces a retail theft charge for allegations he "under-rang" items while at a self-checkout, police said Friday.
Antoine J. Smith was taken into custody late last month after officers from the police department where he worked responded to a business in the 6500 block of Grand Avenue for a reported retail theft, according to a news release from the Gurnee Police Department.

According to police, under-ringing is a deceptive practice involving deliberately scanning items at a lower price than their actual value or intentionally not scanning merchandise during the checkout process. Under state law, under-ringing can be charged as retail theft.
Smith resigned from the Gurnee Police Department on the same day of his arrest on April 28, authorities said.
