Matthew R. Reder, 24, of the 500 block of Sunrise Street in McHenry, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, criminal trespass to building, criminal damage to property, resisting a peace officer and aggravated assault of a peace officer, following a standoff with police.

The incident began after the Crystal Lake Police Department responded around 4:29 p.m. Friday to the 500 block of Darlington Lane for a report of a burglary in progress.

Officers arrived on scene and met with a man, later identified as Reder, inside the residence who threatened officers with a knife and immediately barricaded himself inside the bathroom.

“Officers set up a perimeter on the residence and continued to talk with the armed subject in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. Additional police units were called to the scene to assist with the incident,” Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Thomas Kotlowski said.

After several hours of negotiations, Reder surrendered to police and a SWAT team without incident.

Reder had an active arrest warrant out of Crystal Lake at the time of his arrest for two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, two counts of production of child pornography and two counts of possession of child pornography.

Those charges stem from an incident in October 2019 in which Reder allegedly sexually assaulted a child under the age of 13 in the bathtub of a Cary apartment, according to a criminal complaint.

Detectives recovered video and photos that they say Reder recorded during the assault.

He also had an active arrest warrant out of Naperville for possession of methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kotlowski said that the standoff was an isolated incident believed to be related to a domestic situation. There were no injuries reported.
