McHenry Co. Serial Killer To Appear Before Parole Board
Mark Smith was convicted in the 1970s of raping and killing a young mom and an area teen. He is serving a 500-year prison sentence.
MCHENRY, IL — A serial killer who raped and killed two women and a teen in 1970 in the Chicago area — and who was convicted of or confessed to killing nine other women in the U.S. and Germany —will appear before the state parole board early next month.
Mark Alan Smith, 74, is serving a 500-year prison sentence for kidnapping, raping and killing Jean Ann Lingenfelter, a 17-year-old McHenry High School student, and for abducting a 27-year-old mother to two, Jean Waldron Bianchi, from a McHenry laundromat before sexually assaulting her, stabbing her several times and leaving her to drown under a bridge, according to Shaw Local News Network.
He later confessed to raping and killing a 23-year-old co-worker at a Des Plaines-area research facility and was convicted of killing a 20-year-old woman in Mountain Home, Arkansas, in 1969. He also confessed to killing eight young women in Germany in the 1960s while stationed there with the U.S. Army, according to the article.

the Illinois Prisoner Review Board will consider his early release during a hearing on July 3.
