McHenry County Officials Warn Of Property Tax Scam
The amount that is claimed to be owed in the letter is completely made up, officials said.
MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — Officials in McHenry County are warning residents of a property tax scam letter that is being sent out to taxpayers in the county.
The tax scam letter appears to come from McHenry County Government, but in the very bottom of the letter in small print there is a disclosure statement from a “Tax Registry LLC," according to a news release from the treasurer's office. The letter urges taxpayers to contact them to make payment for taxes, fees and penalties.
The amount that is claimed to be owed is completely made up, officials said.

The McHenry County Treasurer’s Office is the only authorized entity for real estate tax collection, according to a news release.
In addition, there is no known address for the company and the phone numbers shown on the letter are not local 815 area code phone numbers.

"Do not be fooled by this mailing, and do not contact this company regarding paying your real estate taxes or addressing any outstanding financial issues," according to a statement from the treasurer's office.
