Metal Detectors Put In Place Amid 'Somewhat Contentious' Park District Board Meetings
Those attending the meeting at Crystal Lake's Main Beach on Monday were required to take part in a metal detector screening.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — Crystal Lake Park District Board meetings have become "somewhat contentious" since new board members were bought on board in May, leading one board member to request upped security at the meetings, park district officials said this past week.
On Monday evening, that wish was granted and everyone attending the meeting at Crystal Lake's Main Beach, 300 Lake Shore Drive, were required to take part in a metal detector screening.
"Since the installation of new board members back in May, board meetings have been somewhat contentious due to decision the new board members have made," Jason Herbster, executive director for the Crystal Lake Park District, told Patch. "This has created a somewhat disrespectful environment, causing one board member to be fearful for their safety."

The "current climate" at recent board meetings as well as "anger expressed towards the board" lead to the stepped up security, Herbster said.
"Given the current climate at some previous Board meetings and some anger expressed towards the Board, additional security measures were requested by a Board member given recent events in our world," he said.

The following message was added to Monday's park district board agenda.
"For the safety of all participants, entry to the upcoming Crystal Lake Park District Board Meeting (Mon, Sep 22, 2025) will take place through a metal detector screening. Those planning to attend are encouraged to arrive early to allow enough time to complete the screening process prior to the start of the meeting," according to a note on the park district board website. "If possible, avoid bringing bags as they will be subject to search. Clear bags are recommended."
It's unclear at this point if the metal detector screenings will be required at all park district board meetings moving forward. Patch.com has requested additional information regarding the matter.
