Missing McHenry Man Found Dead In Lake Michigan

The 56-year-old man was reported missing on Wednesday and his body was found Friday in the Waukegan Harbor.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A 56-year-old McHenry man has died after he fell off his boat and into the waters of Waukegan Harbor, authorities said.

The man, who has been identified as Donald Berkoski, was reported missing from McHenry County on Wednesday, according to a news release from the Lake County Coroner's Office.

On Friday morning, his body was found in the Waukegan Harbor, 55 South Harbor Drive in Waukegan, by officers with the Waukegan Police Department. Police were called to the harbor at about 6:15 a.m. for a well-being check and found the body in the water while searching the area, according to the news release.

The Waukegan Fire Department responded to the scene and divers recovered the body.

Authorities say it appears Berkoski was on his boat in the harbor when he fell over the side and into the water. It's unclear at this point what happened to cause him to fall into Lake Michigan, according to the news release.

The Lake County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy and has ruled out any significant trauma being the cause of Berkoski's death. Final autopsy results are pending toxicology, including carbon monoxide testing, and further medical studies, according to the news release.

The incident remains under investigation.
