The caller, identified as Shader, reported her 3-year-old girl, named Ivy, as being missing, according to Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Thomas Kotlowski.
Numerous officers, detectives and search canines were sent to the scene as part of the investigation.
Shader reported to police that the girl was last seen in the area of Berkshire Lane and Somerset Lane when she went missing.
Around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, officers developed information that the child was not actually missing as previously reported.
The child was located safe and unharmed at a separate Crystal Lake residence with an acquaintance of the mother, Kotlowski said.
Kotlowski said that the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) recommended the child be turned over to her father.
Shader was arrested and transported to the McHenry County jail where she remains held pending a bond court hearing. It is unclear why the woman reported her child missing.
“Crystal Lake Police are thankful for all the assistance provided by other public safety groups as well as from the community. This case remains an active investigation,” the Crystal Lake Police Department said in a statement Wednesday evening.
