Motor Home, Garage Destroyed in Cary Fire

Fire started in detached garage, but spread to motor home parked nearby.

A motor home and detached garage were destroyed in an early morning fire on Wednesday.

The Cary Fire Protection District responded at 1:07 a.m. to the report of fire at 719 Main Street Road in unincorporated Cary, according to Lt. Michael Douglass, public information officer for the district.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a detached garage fully engulfed in fire. The fire already had spread to a 30-foot motor home parked next to the garage, Douglass said.

Fire crews extinguished the fire within 30 minutes, but were on the scene for several hours trying to determine the cause of the blaze.

Property owner William Maloney told fire officials he rents the home, but kept his motor home stored next to the garage. No one was injured in the blaze, and an monetary estimate of the damage was not yet available.

The house is located in an area without fire hydrants, Douglass said. For that reason, additional assistance was rendered by the Algonquin-LITH Fire Department, which provided a ladder truck. Fox River Grove and Nunda Rural fire departments provided water tankers.

Douglass said this was the district's second fire call in the past four days.

Firefighters extinguished a fire on Saturday in a second-story room at a house at 112 Fox St., also in unincorporated in Cary. While the fire was contained to the one room, it left the house uninhabitable, Douglass said.
