Police Make Arrest In March Crystal Lake Armed Robberies Case
Crystal Lake police said the investigation into March 29 armed robberies is still active pending a second arrest.
CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — The Crystal Lake Police Department said an armed robbery suspect has been arrested as he and another were identified as a result of an investigation into recent armed robbery incidents in McHenry and Lake Counties. According to a release from the Crystal Lake Police Department, police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Open Pantry Gas Station in the 4800 block of Northwest Highway on Sunday, March 29. Then 50 minutes later, police said they responded to a report of an armed robbery the Circle K Gas Station in the 200 block of N. Route 31.
Detectives determined both cases were related, involving two male suspects that had forcefully removed cash from the register while armed with a handgun before leaving the businesses, according to a release. Police added that the same pair had committed several more armed robberies in McHenry and Lake Counties throughout the rest of the evening.
Detectives from the Crystal Lake Police Department conducted an extensive investigation into the reported crimes, working with law enforcement agencies also affected by this crime spree, police said. As a result, both suspects were identified and arrests warrants were recently obtained for Matthew J. Wegleiz, 23, of the 2200 block of S. 59th Avenue, Cicero, and Shaquille DD Davidson, 24, of the 1400 block of Canal Street, Chicago.

Wegleiz was arrested on the active warrant Friday, April 26 by Gurnee Police Department, accused in the Crystal Lake armed robberies, police said. He was charged with two counts of felony armed robbery, and his bond was set at $1,000,000 with 10 percent to apply as he's being held at the Lake County Jail, police said.
Police said the investigation into this case is still active pending Davidson's arrest.

No injuries were reported in the Open Pantry and Circle K incidents, according to police.
