Relative Steals $1.9M From Elderly Man: Authorities

CARY, IL — A 54-year-old Barrington man faces felony charges for allegations he stole $1.9 million from an 80-year-old relative after he was named the elderly man's power of attorney, police said Wednesday.

Douglas Boncosky now faces aggravated identity theft, theft exceeding $1,000,000, financial exploitation and forgery charges in connection with the reported thefts, according to a news release from the Cary Police Department.

Police say Boncosky was named the power of attorney in 2018 for the 80-year-old family member, who lived in Cary at the time, according to a news release from the Cary Police Department. Between then and August, Boncosky is accused of unlawfully writing numerous checks and transferring funds from himself to his business from the elderly man's accounts.

In total, Boncosky stole $1.9 million from the family member, police said.

Boncosky has been arrested and is in custody at the McHenry County Jail. He is expected to appear for a detention hearing on Tuesday.
