SUV Found In Fatal Hit-And-Run; Boy, 15, Killed Was 'Heart Of Our Household'

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office has tracked down the SUV believed to be involved in last week's fatal hit-and-run near Crystal Lake.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — The McHenry County Sheriff's Office has located a sport utility vehicle they believe was involved in a hit-and-run collision that claimed the life of a 15-year-old bicyclist.

But authorities have not released any more information as of Monday regarding whether anyone is in custody in connection with the collision, which happened on Terra Cotta Road near the intersection of Deering Oaks Lane in unincorporated Crystal Lake Wednesday night.

Nick Laureys was biking home with a friend after going fishing near Crystal Lake when he was hit from behind by the SUV at about 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to police and a GoFundMe set up to raise funds for Laureys' family.

The SUV then fled the scene. Over the weekend, police said the vehicle had been found.

Lance Laureys, Nick's uncle, said his nephew had been living with him for the past two year along with Nick's younger brothers, Chris, 12, and Sam, 4, according to the GoFundMe, which has brought in more than $6,000 and will be used to cover funeral and memorial expenses.

"He loved his siblings deeply and was always looking out for them. I bought a new home so everyone could have their own space, and Nick quickly became the heart of our household," Lance Laureys wrote. "Nick’s loss has left a hole in our family and our community."

Laureys was a student at Woodstock North High School.
