Technical Issue Disrupts Crystal Lake Fireworks Show: Officials

A shell detonated in the launch tube during the fireworks show at Lakeside Festival in Crystal Lake Sunday.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — Those who stopped out to Sunday night's fireworks show at Lakeside Festival may have left a bit underwhelmed this year.

City officials say a technical issue lead pyro technicians to stray from their originally choreographed show shortly after fireworks began over Crystal Lake Sunday.

About seven minutes into the fireworks show, "a significant event occurred on the platform causing a shell to detonate in the launch tube severely affecting the show’s ability to continue as planned," according to a news release from the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department.

No one was injured, and the fireworks show was immediately shut down, fire officials said.

But in order to make the platform safe enough to dock on the shore, the pyro technicians from American Fireworks Company continued to intermittently launch several fireworks off, fire officials said. This was not a part of the original choreographed show.

"The City of Crystal Lake would like to apologize to those in attendance as this show did not meet the expectations set forth by the City and previous 4th of July celebrations," city officials said in a statement released Monday.
