Juvenile Captured Video Of Airborne Crash That Injured 2 Boys: Police

KANE COUNTY, IL — A juvenile who was riding along with a group of boys got out of the car to capture video just prior to a single-vehicle collision on a Huntley-area road known for its crests, dips and joy rides.

The crash happened Friday evening when the 2024 blue Hyundai Elantra went off the roadway in the 44W900 block of Dietrich Road in Hampshire Township. Police say the car was headed east on Dietrich Road at a high rate of speed when it went airborne.

After going off the road, the car went back onto the roadway before sliding sideways and hitting a tree, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office. Two passengers in the car, both 14-year-old boys from Lake in the Hills, became trapped inside due to the crash.

Emergency crews extricated them from the car, and one of the boys was airlifted to Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago for treatment of injuries to his head and torso. The other teen was taken by helicopter to Loyola Medicine Children's Hospital in Maywood for a broken femur in his right leg, according to authorities.

The driver, a 16-year-old Huntley boy, was taken to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley by his parents for serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening, including a possible concussion, police said.

Amy Johnson, undersheriff with the Kane County Sheriff's Office, said investigators are still working to determine if the crash video has been posted online, but as of Thursday morning, it did not appear to have been. Detectives were talking with the teen who got out of the vehicle to capture the video as an investigation into the collision continues, she said.

Authorities are not releasing any identifying information regarding the teens involved in the crash as of Thursday. And as of Thursday, authorities have not received any updates on the conditions of the teens involved in the crash.

Detectives are working to determine if charges or citations will be filed. Police are not, at this point, planning to file any charges against the teen who filmed the collision, Johnson said.

The portion of the rural, narrow two-lane road where the collision occurred has become a hotspot for serious crashes over the years, authorities said. The road has narrow shoulders and multiple crests and dips.

The speed limit is posted at 40 miles per hour, police said. But teens like to "speed off the hills and dips," Johnson told Patch on Thursday.
