Temps, Humidity Soar, McHenry County Cooling Centers Available

Heat indexes are expected to hit between 106 and 110 degrees on Wednesday and excessive heat warnings have been issued by weather officials.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — After temperatures in the upper 90s settled into the area on Tuesday with heat indexes over 100 degrees and more extreme weather expected Wednesday, local residents are able to take advantage of several cooling centers around McHenry County.

The National Weather Service is calling for temperatures to reach at least 90 degrees in the next two days. On Wednesday, residents can expect to see temperatures reach 96 degrees with humidity to again make conditions less than ideal.

Officials with the NWS said that conditions could be such that residents could experience illness due to the high heat.

Weather officials have issued an excessive heat warning for several counties, including McHenry for Tuesday and Wednesday, which could make cooling centers a necessity for some residents.

Forecasters are expecting the heat index to reach anywhere from 106 to 110 degrees before temperatures are forecasted to drop back into the 80s on Friday and into the weekend.

  • Crystal Lake City Hall, 100 W. Woodstock St., Crystal Lake

Hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday

  • Crystal Lake Public Library, 126 W. Paddock St., Crystal Lake

Hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday

  • Ganek Municipal Center, 2200 Harnish Drive, Algonquin

Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday

  • Harvard Community Senior Center, 6817 Harvard Hills Road, Harvard

Hours: This week: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday. The center is normally open from 10 a.m. to noon every Monday and Thursday

  • Huntley Police Department, 10911 Main St., Huntley

Hours: Lobby open 24/7 as a temporary shelter from heat until further notice

  • Lakewood Village Hall, 2500 Lake Ave., Lakewood

Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday
