Woman Pinned Between Vehicles While Inspecting Crash Damage: Police

The 44-year-old woman was critically injured in the collision Wednesday morning in Gurnee, police said.

GURNEE, IL — A 44-year-old woman who stepped out of her car to inspect damage to it following a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning was critically injured when a third vehicle also collided, pinning the woman between the two cars.

The woman has been taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition following the collision, which took place in the eastbound lanes of Grand Avenue near Lawson Boulevard in Gurnee, police said.

The initial collision happened at about 7:45 a.m. when a 2008 Chrysler minivan collided with a 2019 BMW X3. This collision caused only minor damage, according to a news release from the Gunree Police Department.

The driver of the BMW got out to check out the damage to her car and was standing between the back of her BMW and the front bumper of the minivan when 2009 Nissan sedan crashed into the back of the minivan, according to the news release.

The woman became pinned between the two vehicles. Passing motorists noticed the woman lying on the pavement and stopped to help render first aid by applying tourniquets to her legs, according to authorities.

Gurnee officers and paramedics arrived and assisted with life-saving measures before the woman was rushed to the hospital.

Eastbound Grand Avenue remained closed for three hours while investigators with the Major Crash Assistance Team assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the Gurnee Police Department.
