Woman Who Caused Fatal Crash While Under Influence Of Marijuana Sentenced

Alyssa Popp pleaded guilty to a reckless driving charge in McHenry County Circuit Court, and was sentenced to five years in prison.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — A 34-year-old Ingleside woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for causing a fatal collision while authorities say she was under the influence of marijuana.

Alyssa Popp pleaded guilty to a reckless driving charge, and a charge of aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death was dismissed during the hearing Friday in McHenry County Circuit Court, Shaw Local News Network is reporting.

Authorities say Popp caused a crash on Aug. 7, 2021, in the 4300 block of Route 31 in unincorporated Ringwood. Popp was driving a 2021 GMC Arcadia north on Route 31 when it crossed the centerline and hit a 2015 Acura TLC head-on, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The driver of the Acura, Christina Smith, 56, of Elmhurst, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors said video that captured footage of the collision show Popp's vehicle swerving before the crash and tests show her vehicle was driving 51 mph and did not make attempts to break prior to the collision, according to Shaw Local News Network.
