Accused Drunken Driver Fought Deputies While Fleeing Court: Sheriff

The Darien man knocked down one deputy and punched another in the face, the sheriff's office reports.

BRIDGEVIEW, IL — As deputies at the Bridgeview courthouse moved to take an accused drunken driver into custody July 25 after he was ordered held without bond, the man pulled away, knocked down one deputy and punched another in the face.

A third deputy was hit by a podium as the man tried to make his escape, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

He even ran into his public defender in his frenzied flight, but two deputies caught him, handcuffed him and brought him back to lock-up.

Artavius Sims, 21 of Darien, now faces two aggravated battery charges and two resisting an officer charges. These four new charges are in addition to the original DUI charge, for which Sims failed to meet the probation conditions, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy who was knocked to the ground was seriously injured, the sheriff's office reports.

Sims' bond was set at 90,000 on the new charges.
