DARIEN, IL – Darien officials are unsure why orange barrels are still up on Lemont Road, even though it appears construction was done earlier this summer. It is a state Department of Transportation project. During a City Council meeting Monday, Treasurer Michael Coren brought up the issue of the barrels, asking, "Are they going to stay there indefinitely?" Dan Gombac, the city's municipal services director, said he has asked the state. But he has not gotten an answer yet. "I'm thinking it has to do with some type of deficiency, and it hasn't been corrected. That's the only thing I can think of," Gombac said. Coren said he heard from someone that the companies that rent out orange barrels are "perfectly happy" leaving them on the road because they keep getting paid. But Gombac said such costs are affecting the road contractor's bottom line. "It would be only in his best interest to get rid of them," Gombac said. He said he would let the City Council know about Lemont Road as soon as he gets information.
