DARIEN, IL – The 87th Street project in Darien has tied up the intersection with Havens Drive, and some residents want to know when it'll get done.

In a May 25 email to the city, a DuPage County official said the contractor has been directed to get the intersection open.

"This would include paving that portion before 87th Street is ready to be paved, and will result in additional cost to the taxpayers," Kent Kuper, a county senior projects manager, said. "I expect this will be done by early next week."

At Monday's City Council meeting, Alderman Eric Gustafson spoke about the email. He said the intersection appeared close to getting done.

Dan Gombac, the city's municipal services director, said the project had a "significant gas hit" last week, so that may have postponed finishing the intersection.

According to the county website, the 87th Street project is from the Costco entrance west of Woodward Avenue to east of Havens Drive.

The project includes right and left turn lanes, storm sewer improvements, sidewalk upgrades, lighting changes and retaining walls.
