Disbanding The Darien Environmental Committee

📣 DARIEN RESIDENTS — PLEASE SHOW UP TOMORROW

Tomorrow (Wednesday) November 19th at 6:30 p.m. at Darien City Hall, the Council will once again attempt to disband our Environmental Committee — a committee that has served this community for over 38 years.

This matters more than people realize.

The City is trying to reduce our committee to a “club” or “group,” even though those already exist and most aren’t made up of Darien residents. Our Environmental Committee is different:

We are mayor-appointed

We are sworn in to uphold the Constitution

We are actual residents working on real projects that benefit our city, and 4 of the 7 are on Darien Garden Club as Members, the others have backgrounds and careers in all kinds of environmental related fields.

We provide accountability, transparency, and environmental recommendations that don’t always align with certain interests — which is exactly why a government committee should exist

They say we should just “form our own resident group.” But that’s not how local government is supposed to work. Public committees exist so residents have a formal, accountable role inside their own government — not outside of it.

Darien deserves a government that values transparency, resident involvement, and environmental stewardship… not one that tries to quietly eliminate a 40-year committee during a special meeting most people don’t even know about.
