Hinsdale D86 Explains No Snow Day

More substitutes were needed than usual, the superintendent said.

DARIEN, IL – Hinsdale High School District 86 continued classes Wednesday, although not all of its neighbors, including Elmhurst District 205, did.

At Thursday's school board meeting, Superintendent Michael Lach explained.

"To me, you learn best when you're in school," Lach said. "I want to keep our schools open as much as we can. I want people to be safe."

The schools needed 31 substitutes Wednesday, with all the positions filled, Lach said. That contrasts with the 22 substitutes on a typical Wednesday.

Many of the absent teachers needed to stay at home for their young children, he said.

As for students, 12 percent were absent, higher than the usual 6 percent.

"I know there were a lot of people who wanted to spend the day in their pajamas doing their work," Lach said. "I might have thought that myself once or twice. I think we all did the right thing."
