DEERFIELD, IL — If you're looking for some "high-level" classical concerts, but don't want to drive into Chicago, just head on over to "the cave." Located at North Shore Unitarian Church, 2100 Half Day Road, the music venue is described as a "unique mid-century modern space" and is modeled after a cave.

Katherine Petersen, who plays piano for The Way Out Quintet, tells Patch audience-goers can enjoy the ambience of the space and its "exceptional" acoustics. The 300-seat venue is built around a huge rock as its pulpit, and has a wall of colorful and abstract fused glass windows.

The Way Out Quintet, a Chicago-based experimental chamber music group, is set to perform as part of the "Concerts at the Cave" series on Dec. 14.

"Our upcoming concert is an exciting event of classical fusion," Petersen said. "It's a little bit funk, it's a little bit wild — it's an entirely new sound for classical chamber music."

The music is composed by Bjorn Berkhout. Rounding out the group are Sarah Manasreh (clarinet), Chris Wild (cello), Nathaniel Holman (vibraphone), and Matthew Coley (dulcimer/cimbalom/percussion).

The free show will feature music from The Way Out Quintet's double album release, "The Bar Music Project/The Way Out."

Petersen said the first concert at the venue was held in the spring, with plans to have four more, including the upcoming performance. She said the concert series has been well-received, with a "strong following so far."

Both the show and concert are free, though there is a suggested freewill donation of $20 to support the musicians.
