Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital Receives Straight A's for Safety

The Downers Grove hospital is one of only eight Chicago-area hospitals that received straight A grades.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Advocate Good Samaritan hospitals have once again been recognized for their achievements in medical safety standards.

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove was just one among five Advocate hospitals that was recognized Monday by the Leapfrog Group, a national not-for-profit that’s been grading hospitals based on how well they prevent errors, accidents, injuries and infections since 2012.

The hospital, alongside Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, received straight-A grades from the organization.

We’re so proud to be recognized for this meaningful achievement,” Lee Sacks, executive vice president and chief medical officer at Advocate Health Care said in a statement Monday. “Patient safety is our top organizational priority and ingrained in our culture at every level.”

The national Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades for more than 2,500 hospitals are available at the safety score website.

The site says choosing the right hospital can reduce your risk of avoidable death by 50 percent.

“The analysis finds that despite considerable improvement in the safety of hospital care since the Score’s launch in 2012, avoidable deaths remain high,” the site said. “Findings point to a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death in B hospitals, 35 percent higher in C hospitals, and 50 percent higher in D and F hospitals, than in A hospitals.”

Out of the thousands of hospitals graded by the Leapfrog Group and the 113 Illinois hospitals evaluated, only eight Chicago-area hospitals received straight-A grades. Just four in the area received D's.

The eight straight-A hospitals for the fall of 2016 are Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, University of Chicago Medical Center in Chicago, Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, making the western suburbs of Chicago one of the highest-ranked regions near Chicago.

“Our physicians, nurses and associates take this responsibility extremely seriously and remain committed to ensuring the very best possible outcomes for patients, who deserve nothing less,” Sacks said.
