The village of Downers Grove is seeking qualified applicants for a few open positions.
Among vacancies is that of a fleet maintenance technician who will serve in the village's public works department and also oversee vehicles and equipment for local police and fire departments. A deputy fire chief and crossing guard are also needed.
Fleet Maintenance Technician

- Perform maintenance and repair activities on various pieces of light duty and heavy duty equipment, including but not limited to cars, SUV's, light duty trucks, medium duty trucks, heavy duty trucks and semi‐tractors, material spreaders, backhoes, loaders, skid steers, dump bodies, snow plows, trailers, electronic message boards and signs, street sweepers, pumpers, ambulances and aerial equipment.
- Diagnose, service, and repair various systems that are found on automobiles and heavy equipment such as mechanical and computer electronic controls, hydraulic and air brake systems, air conditioning systems, steering, suspension, drivetrain, computer controlled automatic transmissions, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic systems.
- Determine sources of system breakdowns or component malfunctions by utilizing electronic test equipment, computerized diagnostic equipment and personal experience.
- Maintain automobile, heavy duty and off road vehicle functional condition, conduct inspections, repair engine failures, repair mechanical and electrical systems malfunctions, replace parts and components.
- Mount and remove snow and ice control equipment on trucks.
- Maintain records of repairs, orders, and time worked.
- Install, modify and maintain a wide variety of "add on" equipment required/requested by user departments i.e. specialized police, fire and public works equipment.
- Drive and operate vehicles and equipment occasionally to and from service sites, test drive vehicles before and after service and repair, make repairs in the field.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
- Possess customer service skills as it will be necessary to communicate with the departments about the vehicles you will be working on.
- Be available from Nov 15 until April 15 for snow call outs 24 hours a day.
- Best Qualified Candidates will possess:
- Strong background in Heavy Duty / Diesel
- One of the following: Completion of an approved two year program in auto or truck mechanics from an accredited technical school and two or more years of experience in repairing and servicing automotive equipment using electronic testing and diagnostic equipment; ORFive or more years of experience in repairing and servicing automotive equipment.
- Possession of four or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in either truck or automotive repair or ability to obtain certifications within six months of employment.
- Possession of a valid Illinois class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brakes, or the ability to obtain one within six months of the date of hire.
- In addition, the successful candidate must pass a criminal/driving history background check and drug‐screen.
- Experience servicing cars, light and medium duty trucks, class 7 or 8 trucks, light and heavy duty construction equipment, small engine equipment, boats, and other recreational equipment.
- Experience using wire feed welders, stick welders, plasma cutters and acetylene torches.
- Ability to make hydraulic hoses.
- Ability to furnish tools, sockets, wrenches and small hand and air tools up to ½" drive.
- Ability to lift objects weighing up to 70 pounds.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Will have or be willing to obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Normal workday is 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Must also be available to work scheduled and unscheduled weekend and evening hours as required. This is a bargaining unit position in the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150, Public Employees Division.
Starting wages: $51,108 per year, increasing to $73,011 after six years, with benefits. The village also provides an annual tool allowance of $600, rented daily uniforms are provided and cleaned by a uniform service, and a uniform allowance up to $300 per year for outerwear and footwear. Deputy Fire Chief
The deputy chief of operations is under the direction of the fire chief. This individual is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the operations of the fire department; supervising professional management staff; assisting in the accreditation process; participating in the duty chief rotation; and performing related tasks, as required.
Job duties and responsibilities for the deputy fire chief position include:
- Candidates must have experience in the fire service as a chief officer or equivalent position; comprehensive knowledge of current issues in fire management; knowledge of building and construction codes; and the ability to organize, direct and control fire and emergency operations under stressful situations for prolonged periods of time. Candidates will have an active role on the fireground and must be able to demonstrate the technical aspects of emergency scene management. Candidates will be expected to respond to emergencies after hours and will serve in the Duty Chief rotation.
- The ideal candidate will have the ability to work in a collaborative environment, possess strong problem solving skills, and demonstrate team leadership.
- The candidate must exhibit excellent interpersonal and communications skills and a commitment to high professional standards. The candidate will promote teamwork and mentor subordinates for success as it applies to the fire service.
- Additional requirements include:
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Service or related field.
- Five (5) years or more of progressively responsible fire service management experience.
- Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal Fire Officer II required, Fire Officer III or Chief Fire Officer certification desired
- Illinois Department of Public Health EMT-B or higher.
- Valid Illinois Driver's License - class B non CDL minimum
Salary: Grade 19: Salary Range $93,248 - $128,215 DOQ

Crossing Guard
The Village of Downers Grove is accepting applications for a crossing guard to assist schoolchildren at assigned crossings before and after school.
