Green energy initiative saves District 99 nearly $6 million

Started in 2002, district keeps energy from 'going out the window or down the drain' at Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South High Sch

A green energy initiative begun 13 years ago has saved Community High School District 99 nearly $6 million, according to a post by the district’s facilities director, Jim Kolodziej, on Suburban Life Publications.

“This represents a 26 percent reduction of our actual energy costs for water, electricity, sewer and gas,” Kolodziej said in the post. “By avoiding energy costs—money that would have literally gone out the window or down the drain—we’ve been able to funnel savings back into services we provide our students.”

The project has been a combination of changing human behavior with ideas as simple as turning off lights when leaving rooms to capital improvement projects, according to the post.
