DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A Crystal Lake man faces felony charges after police say he stole a purse from a woman at the Shop & Save Market in Downers Grove. Maximus Herman, 21, of Crystal Lake, was charged with felony robbery in connection with the incident.

Police were called to the store at 7241 Lemont Road around 5:30 p.m. Monday. Per prosecutors, Herman approached a woman while she was shopping and took her purse out of her shopping cart before leaving the scene.

Herman is accused of getting into a physical struggle with the woman and causing her to bruise her elbow. He was eventually detained by an off-duty officer from the Illinois State police before being transferred to the Downers Grove Police Department.

“It is alleged that Mr. Herman robbed an innocent woman of her purse while she was shopping at a local market,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

He added, “The type of brazen behavior allegedly exhibited by Mr. Herman will not be tolerated in DuPage County. I want to remind the public to always be aware of your surroundings, particularly during the busy holiday shopping season. We are all thankful that the victim in this case was not seriously injured."

Herman is being held in DuPage County Jail without the option of pretrial release and is set to appear in court on Dec. 18.
