Sandack, Edward Hospital Partner to Host Diabetes Screening Nov. 14

The free diabetes screening will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Downers Grove Recreation Center.

Edward Hospital and State Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Downers Grove) are jointly sponsoring a free diabetes screening for the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Downers Grove Recreation Center, 4500 Belmont Road.

The screening consists of a finger-stick blood glucose test, and a two-hour fast is recommended.

“There is a loved one in almost every family who has been affected by diabetes,” said Sandack in a press release. “While the disease is very serious, with proper screening and treatment, someone who has been diagnosed can live a long, productive life.”

Nearly 800,000 Illinoisans have diabetes and it is estimated that 500,000 are unaware they have the disease. Yearly, $7.3 billion is spent on both direct and indirect costs associated with the care of diabetes in Illinois, accounting for more than 10 percent of all health care spending.

Screenings are vital, because the Centers for Disease Control estimates that 40% of the population has diabetes and does not know it. The earlier treatment and education starts the easier it is to prevent the tragic, costly and sometimes fatal side effects of diabetes.

“I am excited to co-sponsor the screening event along with Edward Hospital,” stated Sandack. “Members of our community should take advantage of this great opportunity to get screened for diabetes and be proactive with their health.”

No appointment is needed for the free diabetes screening.
