Village officials were speedy about filling a recent council vacancy created after a commissioner resigned — "effective immediately" — late last month.

The council is appointing Nicole Walus to replace Gina Vattimo, who had served since her election in April 2015 and announced her decision to leave the council on Aug. 19. Walus is a special education teacher who is also active in the Downers Grove Rotary Club. She will be officially sworn in on Sept. 6.

"I'm honored to have been selected and eager to begin serving the community," she said.

Officials said they were glad to welcome Walus, citing her fresh perspective and "depth of experience."

" ... Both of these things will serve the community well as we move forward to address pending policy decisions and the FY 2017 budget," Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully said. "I am thrilled to have the village council back at full strength."
