DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Construction is set to start Monday on a project focused on improving pedestrian safety near Downers Grove North High School.

The work will include increasing traffic lanes on Main Street between Lincoln and Sherman, extending curbs, painting the crosswalk near the high school's entrance and installing pedestrian islands.

District 99 began to reevaluate pedestrian safety near the school after junior Beth Dunlop was hit by a car while in a crosswalk on Main Street in 2019. The work at Downers Grove North follows pedestrian safety upgrades made near Downers Grove South High School in 2021, including the addition of a traffic light at Springside and 63rd.
